New York is America’s largest city, however, it may also be the country’s loneliest city. People living alone make up forty-eight percent of all households on the island of Manhattan.

“I think it’s the best way to live,” James Conaboy, a 35-year-old New York musician said, “If you want to make a mess, you can make a mess. If you want to paint the walls a certain color, you can do it.”

In the USA, there are more single-person households than classic nuclear families — a married couple and their natural children — according to a latest report. Other cities with high percentages of single households are Washington DC, St. Louis, Denver and San Francisco.

The high number of single households shows today’s values. People living alone, especially unmarried women used to have something to do with sadness. That feeling is no longer true. Self-esteem(自尊)isn’t based on having children and being married any more.

36. New York may be the loneliest city of the USA because_______.

A. many people often feel lonely

B. most of the people there often live alone

C. there are nearly half of single-person households on the island of Manhattan

The yo-yo is one of the oldest and most popular of all toys. The Greeks were playing with yo-yos around 500 BC. It was a popular children's toy in the Philippines during the 16th century, and it was the toy to own in Britain in the early 19th century. Even the Prince of Wales had one!

The first American yo-yo company was started in 1928. The American yo-yos had a special feature. They could stop at the end of the string and spin(旋转) in one place before moving up again. This was called “sleeping”. It allowed the user to do tricks while the yo-yo was spinning. Soon yo-yo fans of all ages were doing tricks with names like “walk the dog”, “rock the baby” and “around the world”.

During the 1970s, yo-yo companies began making their yo-yos more interesting and exciting. Yo-yos lit up in the dark, they whistled, and they had funny shapes. In 1985, the yo-yo even went into space. It was taken on the space shuttle Discovery to see how it would perform in zero gravity. It would still spin, but without gravity to pull it down, it would not “sleep”.

Over the years, competitions and exhibitions have led more and more people to take ‘yo-yoing' seriously. In 1990, the first international yo-yo convention (大会) was held. In 1993, the American Yo-Yo Association was started. For serious yo-yo fans, there's even a National Yo-Yo Museum in Chico, California.

The best thing about yo-yos, though, is that you don't have to be a genius to figure them out. You just need to keep practising, and pretty soon you'll be spinning with the best of them.

Many Chinese teenagers like Andy Lau (刘德华) and Jacky Cheung (张学友) very much. They wrote about them.

Writer

Topic: Who’s a better singer, Andy Lau or Jacky Cheung?

Li Ying

Some people say Jacky is the best Chinese singer. I don’t think so! Andy is the best. I went to his concert last year. It was so wonderful, I almost cried! OK, I did cry, but that’s because Andy is so handsome!

Wang Lin

I disagree with Li Ying. Andy sounds like every other singer. His voice is nothing special. On the other hand, Jacky’s voice is unique, and his songs are so romantic!

Matt Mason has seen the future — and it’s fun. Mason likes thinking about how machines can make our lives easier by doing the work we hate, such as cleaning. He shows a hard floor cleaning system that’s built into the wall: it will blow dirt to a part of the room where it will be collected by a vacuum(吸尘器). Then the system will drop some cleaner on the floor and an arm will mop it up. “This may trouble you,” says Kara, an expert in Mason’s company. “But you can program it to come on at 3 a. m., and it will just wet-mop the floor for you.”

When it comes to the kitchen, Bruce Beihoff, another expert at Whirlpool, is sure that in a few years, robots will be doing most of the boring work, freeing us to relax. “More than just fun, future kitchens will be environmentally friendly,” he says. “A new system will be built in the house which can recycle energy lost from your kitchen to make the whole home warm.”

“The fridge will be the center of the home,” says Daniel Lee, a market expert. The fridge will have a touch screen where you can watch TV, surf the Internet, check your e-mail, keep a shopping list and order vegetables. “Your fridge is the first place you go in the morning and the last place at night,” says Lee.

Ever wonder why a 1.9-meter man and a 1.6-meter woman have to cook meals on counters(工作台)of the same height. “The height was decided over 50 years ago, according to the height of ordinary women,” says Jane Langmuir, an expert of cooking machines. “But times have changed. We have made a new counter where you press a button and it moves to whatever height you want.” At the same time, Ted Selker at MIT’s Counter lab has made the Dishmaker which lets you make dishes and bowls out of plastics at home. After each meal, the dishes are changed straight back into plastics.
