 第一节:阅读下面短文,从短文后所给各题的A B C D四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

                                   A

That cold January night, I was growing sick of my life in San Francisco. There I was, walking home at one in the morning after a tiring practice at the theatre. With opening night only a week away, I was still learning my lines. I was having trouble dealing with my part—time job at the bank and my acting at night at the same time. As I walked, I thought seriously about giving up both acting and San Francisco. City life had become too much for me.

As I walked down empty streets under tall building, I felt very small and cold. I began running, both to keep warm and to keep away from any possible robbers(抢劫犯). Very few people were still out except a few sad—looking homeless people under blankets.

About a block from my apartment, I heard a sound behind me. I turned quickly, half expecting to see someone with a knife or a gun. The street was empty. All I saw was a shining streetlight. Still, the noise had made me nervous, so I started to run faster. Not until I reached my apartment building and unlocked the door did I realize what the noise had been. It had been my wallet falling to the sidewalk.

Suddenly I wasn’t cold or tired anymore. I ran out of the door and back to where I’d heard the noise. Although I searched the sidewalk anxiously for fifteen minutes, my wallet was nowhere to be found.

Just as I was about to give up the search, I heard the garbage truck(垃圾车)pull up to the sidewalk next to me. When a voice called from the inside, “Alisa Camacho?” I thought I was dreaming. How could this man know my name? The door opened, and out jumped a small red—haired man with an amused look in his eyes. “Is this what you’re looking for?” he asked, holding up a small square shape.

It was nearly 3 a.m. by the time I got into bed. I wouldn’t get much sleep that night, but I had gotten my wallet back. I also had gotten back some enjoyment of city life. I realized that the city couldn’t be a bad place as long as people were willing to help each other.

How could we possibly think that keeping animals in cages in unnatural environments----mostly for entertainment purposes----is fair and respectful?

Zoo officials say they are concerned about animals. However, most zoos remain “collections” of interesting “things” rather than protective habitats(栖息地). Zoos teach people that it is acceptable to keep animals bored, lonely, and far from their natural homes.

Zoos claim(声称)to educate people and save endangered species(物种), but visitors leave zoos without having learned anything meaningful about the animals’ natural behavior, intelligence , or beauty. Zoos keep animals in small spaces or cages, and most signs only mention the species’ name, diet, and natural range(分布区). The animals’ normal behavior is seldom noticed because zoos don’t usually take care of the animals’ natural needs.

The animals are kept together in small spaces, with no privacy and little opportunity for mental and physical exercise. This results in unusual and self—destructive behavior called zoochosis . A world—wide study of zoos found that zoochosis is common among animals kept in small spaces or cages. Another study showed that elephants spend 22 percent of their time making repeated head movements or biting cage bars, and bears spend 30 percent of their time walking back and forth, a sign of unhappiness and pain.

Furthermore, most animals in zoos are not endangered. Captive breeding(圈养繁殖) of endangered big cats, Asian elephants, and other species has not resulted in their being sent back to the wild. Zoos talk a lot about their captive breeding programs because they do not want people to worry about a species dying out. In fact, baby animals also attract a lot of paying customers. Haven’t we seen enough competitions to name baby animals?

Actually, we will save endangered species only if we save their habitats and put an end to the reasons people kill them. Instead of supporting zoos, we should support groups that work to protect animals’ natural habitats.

51. How would the author describe the animals’ life in zoos?

   A. Dangerous.      B. Unhappy.       C. Natural.      D. Easy.

52. In the state of zoochosis, animals__________.

   A. remain in cages                    B. behave strangely

   C. attack other animals                D. enjoy moving around

53. What does the author try to argue in the passage?

   A. Zoos are not worth the public support.

   B. Zoos fail in their attempt to save animals.

   C. Zoos should treat animals as human beings.

   D. Zoos use animals as a means of entertainment.

54. The author tries to persuade readers to accept his argument mainly by____________.

   A. pointing out the faults in what zoos do

   B. using evidence he has collected at zoos

   C. questioning the way animals are protected

   D. discussing the advantages of natural habitats

55. Although he argues against zoos, the author would still agree that________________.

A. zoos have to keep animals in small cages

B. most animals in zoos are endangered species

C. some endangered animals are reproduced in zoos

D. it’s acceptable to keep animals away from their habitats

第二节:请根据上面短文内容判断下列句子的正误,并将答案写在答题卷上,如正确请写T,如错误请写F

                                   C

  Life is difficult.

It is a great truth because once we truly understand and accept it. Then life is no longer difficult.

Most do not fully see this truth. Instead they complain about their problems and difficulties as if life should be easy. It seems to them that difficulties represent(代表)a special kind of suffering especially forced upon them or else upon their families, their class, or even their nation.

What makes life difficult is that the process of facing and solving problems is a painful one. Problems, depending on their nature, cause us sadness, or loneliness or regret or anger or fear. These are uncomfortable feelings, often as painful as any kind of physical pain. And since life causes endless series of problems, life is always difficult and full of pain as well as joy.

Yet, it is in this whole process of solving problems that life has its meaning. Problems are the serious tests that tell us success from failure. When we desire to encourage the growth of human spirit, we encourage the human ability to solve problems, just as in school we set problems for our children to solve. It is through the pain of meeting and working out problems that we learn. As Benjamin Franklin said, “Those things that hurt, instruct.” It is for this reason that wise people learn not to fear but to welcome the pain of problems.

56.    From the passage, it can be inferred that life is difficult because our problems bring us pain.

57.    The writer probably used just one short sentence in the first paragraph to save space.

58.    The main idea of Paragraph 3 is that most people complain about how hard their lives are.

59.    According to the passage, we give school children difficult problems to solve in order to     teach them to fear the pain of solving the problem

60.    The saying from Benjamin Franklin “Those things that hurt, instruct” suggests that pain  teaches us important lessons.

第三节:  根据短文内容,回答下列问题。

                                 D

When the weather is hot, you go to a lake or an ocean. When you are near a lake or an ocean, you feel cool. Why? The sun makes the earth hot, but it cannot make the water very hot. Although the air over the earth becomes hot, the air over the water stays cool. The hot air over the earth rises. Then the cool air over the water moves in and takes the place of the hot air. When you are near a lake or an ocean, you feel the cool air when it moves in. You feel the wind. And the wind makes you cool.

Of course, scientists cannot answer all of our questions. If we ask, “Why is the ocean full of salt?” Scientists will say that the salt comes from rocks. When a rock gets very hot or very cold, it cracks. Rain falls into the cracks. The rain then carries the salt into the earth and into the rivers. The rivers carry the salt into the ocean. But then we ask, “What happens to the salt in the ocean? The ocean does not get more salty every year.” Scientists are not sure about the answer to this question.

We know a lot about our world. But there are still many answers that we do not have, and we are curious.

61 what makes you cool when you are near a lake or an ocean?

62.  When will a rock crack?

63.  What carries the salt into the earth and into the rivers?

64.  Can scientists answer all of the questions?

65.  Why are people always curious?
